Along the Saronic Gulf, dozens of organized beaches and many free beaches, starting from the southern suburbs of Athens and reaching the cape of Sounion, make up a truly impressive scenery.
The impressive coastal route along the Saronic Gulf also includes unique tourist resorts, such as Lagonisi and Saronida, and ends at Sounio, where the sanctuary of Poseidon dominates.
Sounio (or Kavo Kolones) is the name of the cape located at the southernmost tip at the heart of Attica prefecture. Its coastline is rocky and steep. It rises almost vertically from the sea to a great height, forming at its foot a small bay to the west, separated by an isthmus from another eastern cove.
Sounio is known because of its important geographical position and also because of the ruins of the ancient temple of Poseidon that are located there. In later years, the wider area was declared a national park because of its environmental value. The sunset from Sounion is famous.
